Things I like about train travel: Staring out of windows, reading, staring out windows again. Looking at the terrible selection of items in the buffet (and then reminding myself the inflated prices are half the price of Ryanair). Then staring out of windows again. Seeing farms, and sheep, and all sorts of things us Londoner's don't normally see. Basically it's about staring out of windows.
Now here's some things I don't like about air travel: Everything.
When I was around 10 years old I used to go exploring on trains. From my grandparents bungalow, I'd catch whichever train came first. A tour of Liverpool suburbs, or circling around a forever rain soaked Manchester. There was no buffet, no first class seats, and - for me then - no particular reason to go where I was going. Just grubby seats and grimy windows. It was marvellous.
So I've decided to do it all again. Further than Stockport.
